dustlands ahead

drag-street-fire

....given the hundreds of righteous citizens in the last year often roughly arrested for....barging into Congress - women shut out for protesting the nomination of a lying rapist on our highest court, people with disabilities and other rights advocates dragged from their wheelchairs for insisting on their access to health care - many wondered why the Capitol Police and their bountiful zip-ties were missing in action only when pudgy white guys in suits were doing the disrupting.
-- Abby Zimet

Rep. Bennie Thompson, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, demanded on Wednesday that the chamber's sergeant at arms "take action" against the dozens of Republican lawmakers who stormed a secure impeachment hearing room with their cellphones, a brazen violation of House rules.

2020

The presidential election shouldn’t be a taste test between the less evil flavor — exclusive of all others, year after year. Why, that would be anti-trust territory. Who is not tired in consumer-driven America of hearing neo-libs say citizens have only two choices at the polls: Coke or Pepsi. Fuck that. Some people like 7 Up. I myself don’t mind a shot of Mountain Dew once in a while. If Sanders had balls, he’d run as Dr. Pepper. Wouldn’t you like to be a pepper too? What do you mean two choices only? Is this America?

dubya, the peace candidate

“An isolationist United States is destabilizing around the world. We are becoming isolationist and that’s dangerous for the sake of peace.”
-- George W Bush

It would actually be great if George W. Bush could shut the fuck up forever, ideally in a locked cell following a public war tribunal. Failing that, at the very least people should stop looking at him as a cuddly wuddly teddy bear with whom it’s fun to share a sporting arena suite or a piece of hard candy or to hang award medals on for his treatment of veterans. This mass murdering monster has been growing more and more popular with Democrats lately just because he offers mild criticisms of Trump sometimes, as have war pigs like Bill Kristol and Max Boot and even John Bolton for the same reason, and it needs to stop. And in the name of a million dead Iraqis, please don’t start consulting this man on matters of peace.

those pesky Russians are still at it

(CNN) Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said Thursday the Russians are currently "grooming" a Democrat running in the presidential primary to run as a third-party candidate and champion their interests.

Ask yourself, what do Trump, Sanders, Corbyn, and Gabbard have in common? … it’s the challenge they represent to global capitalism. Each, in his or her own way, is a symbol of the growing populist resistance to the privatization and globalization of everything. And thus, they must be delegitimized, stigmatized, and relentlessly smeared as “Russian assets,” “anti-Semites,” “traitors,” “white supremacists,” “fascists,” “communists,” or some other type of “extremists.”

our favorite lawyer

“Giuliani’s a hand grenade who’s going to blow everybody up”
    -- John Bolton

The message seems pretty clear: if Giuliani is going down, he’s taking the whole Trump administration with him.

Feel the Hate 2016

"...the way Mr. Sanders is now campaigning raises serious character and values issues.....Engaging in innuendo suggesting, without evidence, that Clinton is corrupt is, at this point, basically campaigning on behalf of the RNC.”
    -- Paul Krugman

"So right now, Sanders’ campaign is the walking dead: a zombie. And having worked for John Kerry during the slugfest of the 2004 primaries, I’ve seen up close how much damage this sort of prolonged "zombie" candidacy can inflict on the eventual nominee—and what’s ultimately at stake for the country."
    -- David Wade

"Idealism and honesty are crucial qualities for me, but I also want someone with experience who knows how to fight hard."
-- Jann Wenner, Rolling Stone, endorsing Hillary Clinton

"...he wants to make us more like northern Europe."
    -- David Brooks

the Don

this video was shown at a three-day conference sponsored by the pro-Trump group American Priority.
The organizer of the event said in a statement on Sunday that the clip had been played at the conference, saying it was part of a “meme exhibit.” He denounced the video and said his organization was looking into how it was shown at the event.

decembererererer

beats

Writing this, I just came back from the barn, soaking wet after three hours of practice on the set, the fog swallowing the ridgetop where I live, the mist shot through with the light of the moon.   I am alive as I’ve never been before – well, no, I am alive as I have ever been after playing drums.  I have seen visions, been swept up in a mystical relation.   All those who know the celestial music, the raging fire of the beat, the disappearance of the ego into musical syncopation – the subservience of the will to that thing Ginger Baker called, simply, “time” – will know what I’m talking about.  All those who don’t – I can’t help them.

dearest motherfuckers

I weep at the feet of Greta Thunberg. In any other era she would have been a pubescent warlord like Joan of Arc, bringing the big men of this world to their knees to beg her sword for mercy. In the sickness of our current age she has been reduced to the roll of a glorified dominatrix. The powerful wait in line to be scolded and humiliated by her razor tongue before posing for a fist-bumping selfie and returning to their private jets as they pat themselves on the back and quip “I deserved that.”
Well they deserve worse.

shashoujian- the Assassin’s Mace,”

Most who watched the Chinese military parade on October 1 saw what looked to be some interesting missiles. For the informed observer, however, they were witnessing the end of an era. Previously, the United States could count on its strategic nuclear deterrence to serve as a restraint against any decisive Chinese reaction to aggressive American military maneuvers in the Pacific. Thanks to the DF-41, this capability no longer exists. Now the U.S. will be compelled to calculate how much risk it is willing to take when it comes to enforcing its sacrosanct “freedom of navigation.”

why d'ya do it?

capitalist world

“A rising share of the goods that make today’s capitalist economies grow would not sell if people dreamed other dreams than they do—which makes understanding, developing and controlling their dreams a fundamental concern of political economy in advanced-capitalist society.”
    -- Wolfgang Streeck

I close my eyes and all I can see is a SUV zipping along a twisting, mountainous road. I want it. Then, too, Mark Zuckerberg might be whispering in my ear late at night for all I know. “Buy it, Mike. Buy it soon.”

alternative

"Corporate media are largely weapons of mass distraction. Language is manipulated to manufacture consent and to limit the bounds of permissible thought. A golden Rolodex of so-called experts produces a mono-chromatic one-note samba of drivel. That’s one reason I started Alternative Radio out of my house many years ago. You can’t simply whine and complain. You need to come up with positive alternatives that give people hope."
    -- David Barsamian

For anyone interested in a deeper look at the construction and deconstruction of American democracy, David Barsamian has had a front row seat with history makers. He has been one of the clearer voices critiquing American media....Barsamian is a touchstone for most supporters of alternative radio — sort of like IF Stone for some, or Studs Terkel for others, and really more like a cross between Edward R. Murrow and Gore Vidal.
